ISEA Student Program FAQ
Who is eligible for membership?
Membership is open to students enrolled in or preparing for an accredited teacher education program and remains in effect until August 31 unless the member begins full, substitute or part-time employment in a public or private education system.
How do I join ISEA SP?
You can simply click here or contact your local chapter advisor for a membership form.
Who is my school's chapter advisor?
Contact the Dean of your School of Education for this information or email Kevin McDermott kmcdermott@isea.org or Coy Marquardt cmarquardt@isea.org.
What are the ISEA SP dues?
When you join our Student Program, you're joining at the local state and national levels. NEA, ISEA and the local university or college chapter. Our combined ISEA and NEA dues are $38 a year. Local dues vary from chapter to chapter.
When can I join?
You can join the Student Program any time during the year but the membership year runs from September 1 through August 31. In other words, if you join in May, you receive benefits until August 31, then you must join again for the next year.
Will you tell me when it is time to renew my membership?
No. While we get addresses on your membership form, students move too often to notify them when their membership lapses. It is your responsibility to renew your membership each year.
The school I attend requires me to have proof of liability insurance before I student teach. What do I need to do?
That depends on when you start student teaching. For example, if you begin your student teaching experience in August of 2009, you need to join for the 2008-09 year and the 2009-10 year. ISEA cannot prorate dues even if you only want to join for one month. The good news is that the discounts and rebates to which you are entitled, double when you become a full time professional.
What do I get for my dues?
You get membership in the world's largest association representing education professionals. You receive leadership opportunities in your local chapter and you become qualified to apply for grants for your projects and scholarships to assist you in completing your education.
In addition, you receive $1,000,000 in liability protection in education related incidents, $300,000 in civil rights protection, up to $35,000 in attorney fees and court costs in criminal cases and up to $500 for damage to your personal property when caused by an assault upon you in the course of your employment.
Other member benefits include:
- Low-interest credit cards
- Car rentals
- Mortgage plan with low down payment options
- Early-start investment plan for retirement
- Life insurance
- Accidental death and dismemberment insurance
- Magazine subscriptions
- And more
What other benefits do I get?
When you become eligible for active membership by becoming a full or part time educational employee, you receive significant discounts and rebates. Former NEA Student members who are Active members and who join the Association during their first year of membership eligibility receive a $5 per year rebate for each year they were a student member up to four years. A rebate form must be completed to receive this benefit.
In addition, first-year teachers who enroll as members of the Association will receive a $20 credit toward the ISEA Active dues for each year of Student-NEA membership. Second-year teachers receive a $10 credit for each year of Student-NEA membership.
