Support Courses for

National Board Candidates

The ISEA is once again offering information and support for teachers interested in pursuing National Board Certification.

In addition to a facilitator network which pairs current National Board Certified Teachers with current candidates, the Association's Professional Development Academy now offers three, 15-hour courses which are available for license renewal or graduate credit:

For persons who begin the certification process prior to Jan. 1, 2008, the state of Iowa will pay half of the fee; and upon successful completion, they will be reimbursed for the remaining half of the fee and will receive a stipend of $2,500 a year for a maximum of ten years. For details, go to the Iowa Department of Education's Web site. This program will not be offered after Jan. 1, 2008.

National Board Certification is a credential demonstrating teaching expertise. A voluntary process established by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS), it is achieved through a rigorous performance-based assessment that takes nearly a year to complete. Since it was created in 1993, more than 47,000 teachers have earned the distinction, including nearly 500 from Iowa. For complete details, visit the NBPTS Web site.
