No Child Left Behind
President George W. Bush signed the new Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) -- the most significant and sweeping federal education policy initiative in nearly 40 years -- into law in 2002, yet few people know much about it and what it could potentially mean for students and public education. The ESEA, also known as No Child Left Behind, imposes a host of new requirements which create enormous challenges for states imposes strict penalties and severe sanctions against so-called "failing" school districts.
And while it established goals everyone supports: high standards and accountability for the learning of all children, NCLB is falling short of meeting those goals for many reasons.
